Study drill

Watch a match with the referee as your focus. Note when the referee changes position and what they need to see. In class, ask for a coach-led explanation of a simple pinning situation from the referee’s viewpoint.

Can the referee see the relevant shoulders and rope contact? What communication keeps all three people informed?

Pitfall to discuss

Do not reduce the referee’s role to counting. Poor sightlines and unshared expectations can make an otherwise simple exchange confusing.
